Mission

4QL Limited is committed to providing a range of affordable software products and Internet based services for the small and very small business to make best use of their computer systems and the Internet.   4QL recognises that the micro business is very different from bigger businesses and carefully designs it products and services to match their needs.

Vision

Within the next 5 years 4QL Limited intends to be a significant supplier of software and Internet services to small and micro businesses in the UK.

The products and services are designed for global use so as resources and opportunities permit will be targeting markets in Europe and beyond.

Strategy

Believing that partnership and collaboration are the way forward for the small business 4QL operates with a very small core staff using a range of strategic partnerships to import the skills, experience and expertise as they are required.  A list of the current partnerships can be found on the web site.

An example of this strategy is software development.   In order to ensure that we achieve both low cost and high quality, together with a Norwegian partner based in the Philippines, we set up a software development company called Nestwood (www.nestwood.com).  By outsourcing the software development and keeping the project management and quality control in-house we are able to offer highly affordable solutions without sacrificing quality.

History

4QL Limited was founded in March 2001 as a spin out from MES Business Equipment Ltd.  The founder, Mike Robertson, started MES in 1985 to provide computer systems and software to the local business community.  He is still a director of MES.

Mike Robertson (director)

Mike Robertson the founder and director of 4QL Limited.

Mike was born in Edinburgh  in 1952.  He was educated mostly in central Scotland and finally in Orkney when his parents moved there at the end of the 60s.  He obtained a BSc (Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 1975 and then worked for a few years at British Telecom's research centre in Martlesham before moving to Shetland to work for the wireline logging company Schlumberger.  After 5 years with them he left to join a local business but in order to further his interest in computers formed MES Business Equipment Ltd in 1985.

The interest in software that was sparked at Martlesham was developed further with MES but eventually in 2001 he created the present company in order to concentrate on software development and Internet services.
